Amateur notes: No. 11 seed EBU 101st advances to MPL First Division semifinals
Plus updates from the WPSL and NPSL as the playoffs start, the Region II Women's Amateur Cup, the Wisconsin Cup and standings from across the state and the upper Midwest.
All 12 teams in the Wisconsin Soccer Leagues Milwaukee Premier League First Division participated in the playoffs this season. Higher-seeded teams won six of the eight matches through the first two rounds.
The two wins by a lower-seeded team are pretty impressive, though.
They both belong to No. 11 seed Elmbrook United 101st, which upset sixth-seeded Street Dreams Reserves 3-2 in the first round and second-seeded Wolves FC 4-2 in the quarterfinals to match its regular-season win total.
Elmbrook United 101st (4-8-1) won two of its final three games of the regular season, meaning they’ve won four of five heading into their unlikely semifinal match-up against the MKE Inferno (7-3-2) on Sunday. EBU 101st defeated the Inferno 5-2 in the teams’ regular-season meeting on June 1.
Defending champion Bavarian United (12-0-0) plays host to the MKE Crush (7-4-1) in Sunday’s other semifinal. The Bavarians have dominated the league, outscoring opponents 70-1 with 10 consecutive shutouts since allowing their lone goal of the season back on Sept. 15 in a 2-1 victory over the Inferno.

Playoff season
After two weather delays, the Milwaukee Torrent fell to Minnesota’s St. Croix Legacy 6-5 on penalties following a 2-2 draw in the WPSL North Lakes Conference final on Wednesday night at Uihlein Soccer Park in Milwaukee.
The Legacy (6-1-2) rallied from a 2-0 deficit and converted all six of their penalties in the shootout to earn a spot in this weekend’s Central Region playoffs in Oklahoma.
Things started well for the Torrent, after the game kicked off late due to inclement weather. Layla Kelbel (Lake Country Lutheran) drew a penalty in the 21st minute and despite seeing the shot saved by St. Croix goalkeeper Hadley Johnson, Kelbel scored on the rebound to put the home side ahead.
Then it took the Torrent (8-0-3) just four minutes to double their lead through UW-Milwaukee’s Ashlyn Skinner-Barrett (Waukesha South).
But Amara Smith cut the visitors’ deficit in half in the 32nd when she scored off a rebound, and following a second weather delay, Wren VanDeWalker leveled the score for St. Croix.
Due to the delays and the approaching facility curfew, the teams agreed to forego extra time and determine the winner on penalty kicks. Each team made their first five kicks before Marquette’s Cate Downs hit the post on the Torrent’s sixth shot, and Emily Hinze converted the next kick to send the Legacy to the regional playoffs.
NPSL: Taylor Pill (Watertown/Maranatha Baptist) and UW-Milwaukee’s Nico Steinweg scored as the Torrent men’s team finished off the regular season with a 2-0 win over the Wisconsin Conquerors on Saturday in Marshfield and tied the Michigan Rangers atop the Central States Conference at 8-2-0. The Michigan side earned the top seed for the conference playoffs based on goal differential after the teams split their meetings. The Torrent will play host to Indiana’s FC Pride on Wednesday at Hart Park in Wauwatosa — Milwaukee swept the regular-season meetings between the teams, 3-0 on the road May 17 and 3-2 at home on June 14.

Women’s Amateur Cup
The Green Bay Glory and the Torrent meet again tonight in the USASA Region II Women’s Amateur Cup final at the Banta Bowl in Appleton. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m., with the winner earning a spot in the national semifinals July 25 at Uihlein.
The Torrent won both of the teams’ meetings in WPSL Lake Michigan Division play this season, 4-1 at home May 31 and 3-0 in Appleton on June 27.
Two of the other three national semifinalists are set: New York’s Rochester Lazers won the Region I title, while Utah’s Pan World WFC are the Region IV champions. Pan World won national titles in 2022 and ’24, while the Lazers advanced to the national final in 2023. The Region III representative is yet to be determined.
Wisconsin Cup
Madison United earned a spot in the final of the second annual Wisconsin Cup — with a big assist from the Glory.
The Glory knocked off the Torrent 1-0 on Wednesday at Uihlein, leaving Madison United atop the South group with four points. Madison United beat the Glory and tied the Torrent in their first season in the competition.
Defending champion Superior City FC has the inside track to the North group title heading into its finale Sunday at the Conquerors. The home side would need to win by more than three goals to jump over Superior City.
