Club soccer catch-up: Lakeshore United Boys Navy 2012 runners-up at USYS National Presidents Cup
Plus updates from the Girls Academy League, ECNL Boys and Girls, U.S. Club Soccer and WYSA's annual Mike Kabanica Scholarship recipients.
Following a loss in group play Saturday, every game was a must-win for the Lakeshore United Boys Navy 2012 team in the 13U Boys competition at the U.S. Youth Soccer National Presidents Cup in Tampa, Fla.
They did that in their group finale Sunday, getting past Kentucky side Javanon 2-1 to earn a spot in the semifinals. A day later, they outlasted previously unbeaten Texas team D10 Lions 4-3 in overtime to advance to the championship game.
And with a four-goal lead in the second half of Tuesday morning’s final, it looked like Lakeshore United would complete that impressive run with a title. But Utah’s 7 Elite Academy Copa South stormed back, scoring four times to pull level — the equalizer coming in the final minute of regulation — then adding two goals in overtime to pull out an amazing 6-4 victory in a match of massive momentum swings.
Only one Wisconsin team has won a National Presidents Cup championship in the event’s 17-year history: Lakeshore United’s U19 Girls Navy team in 2022.
Two other state boys teams played in this year’s national event: Capital East Maroon 2010, who went 1-2-0 in the 15U division, and the Lakeshore United Navy State 2006 team, which finished 0-2-1 in 19U division. Both teams’ losses were both by one goal.
