Top of the box
A record 114 amateur teams are confirmed for the 2025 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup qualifying rounds, U.S. Soccer announced Wednesday.
Once again, the list doesn’t include any Wisconsin teams.
The most recent state team to enter open or local qualifying was Milwaukee’s United Serbians in 2017, but they forfeited their opening match. The last time a Wisconsin team played in the U.S. Open Cup without earning their spot through either a league finish or via the USASA National Amateur Cup was the Madison Fire in 2011.

There are two intriguing games on today’s schedule, both kicking off a little early.
At 5 p.m. in Cedarburg, the Bulldogs (4-0-0) — ranked seventh in the Wisconsin Soccer Coaches Association overall state poll and No. 1 in Division 2 — play host to Stillwater, Minn. The Ponies (2-1-1) are ranked eighth in 3A, Minnesota’s largest division.
And at 5:45 p.m. at Brookfield East, reigning WIAA Division 1 state champion and top-ranked Middleton (5-0-0) faces No. 3 Milwaukee Marquette (3-0-1) as part of the Gusho Showcase. It’s a rematch of a state semifinal from last fall, when the Cardinals advanced 5-4 on penalties following a 1-1 tie.
Middleton hasn’t lost in its past 19 games (16-0-3), while the Hilltoppers are riding a 14-game unbeaten streak (11-0-3) — including a 1-0 win over host Brookfield East on Tuesday that ended the Spartans’ 35-game unbeaten run.
