In a matchup between two of the state’s top-ranked high school boys soccer teams, junior forward Ivan Hooshmand scored in the 74th minute to lift Milwaukee Marquette over Middleton 2-1 Friday night at Brookfield East’s Gusho Showcase.
Hooshmand set up junior Ben Bausch’s 4th-minute opener for the Hilltoppers (4-0-1), and Bausch returned the favor 6 minutes from time as Marquette — ranked third in the Wisconsin Soccer Coaches Association overall and Division 1 state polls — extended its unbeaten streak to 15 games (12-0-3).
Senior Riley Kann pulled the top-ranked Cardinals (5-1-0) level in the 52nd minute, converting from the penalty spot after classmate Jimmy Murphy was fouled in the box.
Senior goalkeeper Connor Wyatt made five saves for the Hilltoppers and counterpart Liev Schiffman also stopped five shots for defending WIAA Division 1 state champion Middleton, which saw its 19-game unbeaten streak (16-0-3) come to an end.

Three more ranked teams were in action Friday at the Cedarburg Quad.
Senior Griffin French scored early in the second half to give Cedarburg the lead, but Stillwater (Minn.) equalized and the teams tied 1-1 in the first match. The Bulldogs (4-0-1) are seventh in the WSCA overall poll and No. 1 in Division 2, while the Ponies (2-1-2) are ranked eighth in Minnesota’s Class 3A, the state’s largest division.
Hudson (5-0-1), ranked sixth overall and in Division 1, tied Westosha Central 1-1 to extend its unbeaten streak to 25 games (21-0-4) — the state’s longest active run.

Maryland 3:0 No. 8 UW
After giving up just two goals in winning their first five games, the Badgers (5-1-0) gave up three goals — two of them off set-piece situations — as they lost to the Terrapins (3-1-3) in a Big Ten Conference opener watched by 2,014 in College Park, Md. UW outshot Maryland 10-7, but put only two shots on target. Chris Steinleitner scored the opener after a corner kick in the 17th minute, then headed a free kick by Max Rogers from the right side on for Bjarne Thiesen to finish with another header in the 47th. Collin Griffith added the final goal on a strike from the top of the box to the left of the D to the far post in the 53rd. Senior goalkeeper Adam Braman made his UW debut, playing the final 15 minutes in goal in relief of freshman Matisse Hébert. The Badgers return home to play host to No. 12 UCLA on Monday night — the game will be shown on BTN at 8 p.m.

The WSL Milwaukee Premier League kicked off its 2024-2025 season last weekend, with seven teams in the Major Division and 12 teams in the First Division.
Bavarian United, which has won a record 33 Majors championships, is not fielding a team in the Major Division this season.
Tom Zaiss, the Bavarian United General Manager and Adult Program Director, said the club opted not to play due to the scheduling conflicts it faces in the spring portion of the Majors season, when it also competes in the Midwest Premier League and the USASA Region II Amateur Cup — last spring, those conflicts led the Bavarians to forfeit multiple Majors matches. Bavarian United Reserves, the 2023-2024 MPL First Division champions, remain in that league this season.
Instead of league play, the Bavarians’ first team plans to play several friendlies against Wisconsin and Illinois teams this fall.
